Remembering Hazel Hall: The Portland Poet Immortalized in a Nob Hill Park
Hazel Hall began her journey as a writer at just nine years old. Tragically, only three years later in 1898, she contracted scarlet fever. While scarlet fever is easily treatable today with modern antibiotics, no such treatment existed at the turn of the 20th century. The illness left her paralyzed.
For the remainder of her life, Hall lived inside a small home in Portland, Oregon’s Nob Hill neighborhood. Confined to a wheelchair, she sewed to earn a living and wrote poetry to nurture her soul. She passed away in 1924, leaving behind a profound literary legacy.
The Hazel Hall PoETRY GARDEN
On Mother’s Day in 1995, a small public park was dedicated to her memory. Replacing a few parking spaces, the pocket park is located just north of 106 NW 22nd Place, right next to the home where Hall spent her final days.
Funded by the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission, the park’s most outstanding feature is a series of granite markers beautifully engraved with Hazel Hall’s poetry—a permanent tribute to one of Oregon’s most resilient literary voices.
