Notable Women of Portland by Tracy J. Prince and Zadie Schaffer (2017)
Intro: Mother-daughter authors Tracy Prince Phd and Zadie Schaffer have produced a book according to Prince that “goes into the messy parts of history. History is messy, and I don’t believe in cleaning it up,” From the cover “The story of Portland, Oregon, like much of history, has usually been told with a focus on male leaders. This book offers a reframing of Portland’s history–starting from 10,000 years of Native American women, to pioneer women, to women of the Progressive Era, WWI, WWII, and post-war women, with additional chapters on Women in the Arts and Women in Politics.”

This movie is filmed in a number of Portland Neighborhoods, the bulk are in Nob Hill Portland. Many MLC students were used in the filming. My personal favorite is the footage of the Lovejoy Columns such a small amount of this amazing free spirited art upon the columns were painted while he was on the clock Greek immigrant Tom Stefopoulos filled time between 1948 and 1952 to create numerous murals upon the raw cement protected by the overpass ramp.

Innocents Aboard (1869) by Mark Twain. I often mention the conflict between Mark Twain and Mrs. Nina Larowe. This book can be found as a free download online. Mrs. Larowe not only donated her wealth to OHS even her obituary headline included her conflict with Mark Twain who was ironically according to her biography on the vessel the Quaker City because of her and her husband.

In my effort to find a link to Nina’s Autobiography online. I found a book inspired by it and another women scandalized by the trip titled: Innocents at Home (2024) by Linda Ulleseit. “Nina Larrowe anticipates resuming her place in New York society, but Twain’s careless remarks about her behavior ostracize her and force her to reevaluate everything she thought she knew. Nina becomes an actress and embarks on a life she never could have imagined. After a series of disappointments, Nina must rise from the ashes once again to craft a life she can take pride in.”
Note the author uses “rr” Nina abundance of names and name spellings is a continues irritation.
